German religious and military order: a German religious and military order that was founded as a charitable order in Palestine in 1190 during the Third Crusade but became a military organization operating in Eastern Europe. In the 13th century it conquered Prussia, where it introduced Christianity through killing many of the native inhabitants and colonizing it with Germans.
