President Theodore Roosevelt was fond of bear-hunting. His nickname, "Teddy," was used in a humorous poem in the New York Times about the adventures of two bears. Their names (Teddy B and Teddy G) were then appropriated to two bears in the Bronx Zoo whose popularity caused toy manufacturers to market toy bears as teddy bears.
