tare or tear? Do not confuse the spelling of tare and tear, which sound similar. There are two words spelled tare, one denoting a type of plant, the other the weight of a container, packaging, or vehicle: both are rarely encountered in general usage. The word tear, meaning "to pull apart or rip" and "to move or act quickly," or as a noun "a hole or split," is much more common: Tear it in half. There's a tear in this sheet.
