Cultural Note

The Bayeux Tapestry, a large embroidery (1092) found at Bayeux in northern France. A remarkable work of art and an important historical document, it consists of a band of linen measuring 231 ft./70 m by 20 in./50 cm, embroidered with vivid scenes that depict the Norman conquest of England. Its existence was first recorded in 1476 at Bayeux, where it was used to decorate the nave of the cathedral.
