1. joint with bones linked by cartilage: a joint in which there is slight movement between bones that are held together by cartilage, e.g. between the ribs and the breastbone

2. joint with cartilage converting to bone: a joint in which the cartilage linking two bones in childhood is replaced by bone as development progresses
