Definition:
 
1. definitely true: unquestionably true or real and not in doubt
One thing is sure, we'll never make the same mistake again!

2. firmly believing: believing strongly and for a good reason, or knowing for a fact, that something is true or the case
Are you sure that she understood you?

3. bound to occur: inevitably going to do something or to happen, or confidently expected to be going to do something or to happen
He's sure to notice that something's missing.

4. certain to obtain something: definitely able to or definitely going to obtain or achieve something
Many people book early in order to be sure of the best seats.

5. very confident: very confident about something, especially personal beliefs or abilities
It was her self-confidence that made her so sure of her answer.

6. always effective: effective, accurate, and reliable at all times
His aggressive manner is a sure sign that he is frightened.

Word Usage

The use of sure as an adverbial intensifier, as in the sentence We sure are glad to see you! is characteristic of informal U.S. usage; its use in formal writing is inappropriate.
