| Su·mer [ smər ] ancient country of southern Mesopotamia, in present-day Iraq. Archaeological discoveries reveal the area to have been first settled in the 5th millennium bc. It became prosperous and powerful from about 3000 bc, and fell into decline from about 1760 bc, when it was absorbed into Babylonia and Assyria. |
