Definition:
 
1. act of choosing: an act of choosing somebody or something from a wide variety of others

2. somebody or something chosen: somebody or something chosen from among others
among the judges' final selection

3. available choice: the range from which somebody or something can be selected
a fantastic selection of carpets

4. genetics survival of fittest: the process by which organisms that adapt well to their environment produce offspring, while those that do not adapt die out, resulting in gradual changes in a species. Selection may take place naturally natural selection or as the result of breeding for specific characteristics artificial selection.
