noun  (plural sta·ples)
Definition:
 
1. bent wire used to fasten papers: a small thin piece of metal wire bent into the shape of a flattened U with square corners, used to fasten things together, especially sheets of paper. The staple is driven through the material by a device that also bends its two ends inward and flattens them so that they grip the material firmly.

2. U-shaped fastener for wood or masonry: a small U-shaped piece of strong metal wire with two sharp points, usually driven into a surface to hold something such as a bolt or cable in place
