Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, a children's story (1865) by British writer Lewis Carroll. This extraordinarily inventive and immensely popular tale was based on stories that the author made up to entertain his friends' children. A girl called Alice dreams that she falls down a rabbit hole into a surreal world inhabited by eccentric characters including the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, and the King and Queen of Hearts. The expressions "Curiouser and curiouser!" and "Oh my fur and whiskers!" are direct quotations from this book. The often-used expressions "grin like a Cheshire cat," "wild as a March hare," and "mad as a hatter" have associations with characters in the book.
