-wise

-wise

suffix
Definition:

1. in a particular manner or direction
clockwise

2. with regard to: with regard to, with respect to ( informal )
salary-wise

[ Old English -wīsan< wīse "manner" (see wise2)]

Word Usage
Is it wise to overextend -wise?

Many critics object to words ending in the suffix -wise when the meaning is "with regard to, with respect to," as in these controversial examples: moneywise, timewise, and politicswise, as in Politicswise, this has been an exciting year. The use of words ending in -wise is acceptable when the meaning of the suffix is "in a particular manner or direction," as in clockwise, counterclockwise, and lengthwise.
