inheritance exclusively through sex cells: the principle that the inherited characteristics of any organism are determined solely by material germplasm contained in the male and female sex cells from which the organism develops. This theory excludes any role for the body cells in inheritance and rules out the inheritance of characteristics acquired during an organism's lifetime. It remains a fundamental tenet of modern genetics.
