noun  (plural spin·dles)
Definition:
 
1. specially shaped rod for spinning thread: a handheld rod with a notched end through which strands of natural fibers are drawn, then twisted into thread and wound around the rod

2. thread-spinning rod on spinning wheel: a device similar to the handheld spindle, attached to a spinning wheel

3. mechanical thread-spinning device: a device on a spinning machine for spinning thread and winding it onto bobbins

4. spindle-shaped piece of wood: a long thin piece of wood that is shaped like a spindle, e.g. a table leg or baluster

5. spindle-shaped cell structure: a spindle-shaped structure consisting of a network of microtubule fibers along which chromosomes are distributed and drawn apart during meiosis and mitosis
