South Aus·tra·lia [ sòwth aw stráylee ə ]state occupying the central part of southern Australia. Founded in 1834, it was the only Australian colony set up as a free settlement rather than a penal colony. Capital: Adelaide. Population: 1,534,250 (2004 estimate).
