Definition:
 
1. distinct part: a distinct part that can be separated or considered separately from the whole of something

2. unit of people: a group of people forming a unit within a larger group, e.g. a subdivision of a military unit, or the musicians playing a particular kind of instrument in an orchestra

3. subdivision of document: a major subdivision of a written work such as a book or newspaper, or of an official or legal document, often numbered

4. view of something cut through: a view or representation of something cut through to show its internal structure or workings

5. U.S. geography functional area: an area of a country, county, city, or town, usually characterized by the type of activity mainly carried on there

Word History

The Latin word secare "to cut," from which section is derived, is also the source of the English words bisect, dissect, insect, intersect, secateurs, sector, and segment.
