Definition:
 
1. member of W African people: a member of a people living in West Africa, mainly in Mali and Niger. The Songhai established a powerful empire in this area during the 7th century ad, and they remained the dominant ethnic group until the 16th century.

2. language of Songhai: the Nilo-Saharan language of the Songhai. Native speakers: 2 million.
