So·ma·li·a [ sō mlee ə, sə mlee ə ] country in eastern Africa. It consists of the former Italian Somaliland and British Somaliland, both of which united to become independent Somalia in 1960. During the civil war that broke out in the early 1990s, the northern part of the country declared independence as the Republic of Somaliland.
