The Seagull, a play (1896) by the Russian writer Anton Chekhov. The plot centers on the young writer Triplev's love for the aspiring actress Nina, who, to Triplev's dismay, allows herself to be seduced by an older, more famous writer, Trigorin. One of Chekhov's most successful plays, it typically eschews melodrama for social and psychological analysis.
