Spelling Note

ware, wear, were, or where? Do not confuse the spelling of ware, wear, were, and where, which sound similar. Ware (referring to similar things, or things made of the same material), is most likely to be confused with wear (referring to clothing) in compound words such as software, tableware, footwear, and knitwear. Were is the past tense of are (as in We were all young once), and where is used to ask about or indicate the place that somebody or something is in, at, going to, or coming from: Where were you last night? They still live in the town where they were born.
