transitive and intransitive verb 
Definition:
 
1. make or become less hard: to become soft or softer, or make something soft or softer

2. be kinder: to become gentler or less harsh, or make something gentler or less harsh

3. wear somebody down: to make somebody's resolve less firm, or become less firmly resolved

4. harass enemy: to weaken an enemy's resistance or morale by continuous bombardment, or be weakened in this way

5. reduce something: to decline, e.g. in price, demand, or economic activity, or make something do this
