noun  (plural soaps)
Definition:
 
1. cleansing agent: a solid, liquid, or powdered preparation made by reacting potassium or sodium hydroxide with animal or vegetable oils. Use: cleaning.

2.  ( informal )
Same as  soap opera


3. metallic salt combined with fatty acid: a metallic salt of a fatty acid, often made with calcium, copper, aluminum, or lithium. Use: bases for waterproofing agents, ointments, greases.
