Wa·la·chi·a [ wə láykee ə ] or Wal·la·chi·a [ wə láykee ə ]former region in southeastern Europe, in present-day southern Romania. Founded as a principality toward the end of the 13th century, it was ruled by Turkey from 1387 until it joined Moldavia to form Romania in 1861.
