Wake Island

Wake Is·land [ wáyk lənd ] group of three islets constituting a coral atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. It was occupied by the United States in 1898 and held by the Japanese in World War II between 1941 and 1945.
Population: 126 (1997).
Area: 6.5 sq km (2.51 sq mi)
