waive

waive [ wayv ] (past and past participle waived, present participle waiv·ing, 3rd person present singular waives)

transitive verb

Definition:

1. surrender claim: to give something up voluntarily, especially a right or claim

She waived her right to remain silent.

2. not enforce something: to refrain from enforcing or applying something

They decided to waive the restrictions.

3. temporarily delay something: to put off something for a time

4. make player available to other team: to remove a professional ball player from a team's roster, thereby making the player available to other teams

Spelling Note


	waive or wave? Do not confuse the spelling of waive and wave, which sound similar. Waive is a verb meaning "surrender or refrain from enforcing something": She waived her right to remain silent. They decided to waive the restrictions. The related noun is spelled waiver. Wave is a noun and verb with various meanings, usually involving ridge-shaped or undulating motion, as in the waves of the ocean, radio waves, waved goodbye. The noun waver is unrelated to wave: it corresponds to the verb waver meaning "go back and forth between possibilities."
