Scotland

Scot·land [ skóttlənd ] country forming the northernmost part of Great Britain and of the United Kingdom. It became united with England by the Act of Union in 1707, though the crowns had been united since 1603. Following a referendum in 1997, a separate Scottish Parliament was established in 1999 giving the country a limited degree of self-government.
Capital: Edinburgh.
Population: 5,062,011 (2001).
