1. anointing with oil: the rubbing or sprinkling of oil on somebody as part of a religious ceremony or medical treatment

2. substance used in rite or treatment: an oil, ointment, or salve used in religious rites or medical treatment

3. real or pretended earnestness: real or pretended earnestness or fervor, especially with regard to spiritual matters and especially when expressed in suitably solemn language
