noun  (plural um·lauts)
Definition:
 
1. change in vowel sound: in Germanic languages, a change in the way a vowel is pronounced, caused by the influence of another vowel in a syllable immediately after it

2. accent over vowel: in Germanic languages, the mark (¨) that is placed above a vowel to show that it is pronounced differently from the way the vowel is usually pronounced

Definition:
 
1. transitive and intransitive verb change vowel sound: to change a vowel sound because of other vowel sounds close to it, or be changed in this way

2. transitive verb mark vowel with two dots: to write or print a vowel with an umlaut above it
