The term zigzag fence belongs to Upper New England. It occupies much the same territory as snake fence; together, they contrast with the Pennsylvania and North Midland worm fence. In the South and the West, rail fence prevails, with scattered instances of the Eastern forms, as well as log fence, split-rail fence, and stake-and-rider fence.
