[Mid-16th century. Alteration of scavager, former official whose responsibilities included street-cleaning < Anglo-Norman scawager< Flemish scauwen "look at"]

Word History

The term scavager was originally, in the Middle Ages, an official who collected taxes levied on overseas merchants. Later the term came to denote a street-cleaner, and by the time it had metamorphosed into scavenger (by the same process as produced messenger from messager and passenger from passager) it had completed its descent to its modern meaning.
