Word Usage
saving or savings?

Savings means "money saved," as in Substantial savings help provide a secure retirement. In this sense it takes a plural verb. On the other hand, savings is commonly used with a singular verb to mean "a particular amount of money saved by buying the equivalent at a lower rate," as in A savings of $3,000 was gained during the transaction. This usage undoubtedly has its origins in the well-established expressions a savings and loan association, a savings bank, and a savings account. However, some people still prefer saving in the singular in this context: A saving of $3,000 was gained during the transaction.
