Definition:
 
1. stop somebody from doing something: to prevent somebody or yourself from doing something
I couldn't restrain myself from calling out.

2. control something: to keep somebody or something under control or within limits
finally able to restrain the violence
barriers to restrain the crowds

3. control somebody: to physically control the movements of a person or animal
Restrain him before he hurts someone.

4. imprison somebody: to put somebody in prison or otherwise take away his or her freedom
