São Tomé and Príncipe

São To·mé and Prín·ci·pe [ sow tō mày ənd prínssəpə ] island country in the Gulf of Guinea, approximately 290 km (180 mi) west of Gabon, West Africa. Formerly Portuguese, the territory became an independent republic in 1975.
