Definition:
 
1. substitute for something: to take the place of or substitute for somebody or something
The new ways rapidly replaced the old.

2. supplant somebody or something: to fill the place of somebody or something with somebody or something else
You can be replaced.

3. put something in another's place: to provide or find a substitute for something
can't afford to replace his car

4. put something back in its place: to put an object back in its usual place
She replaced the receiver slowly.

Word Usage
replace or substitute?

The constructions involving these two words are different, although the resulting meaning is usually the same. You replace item B with (or less often by) item A, but substitute item A for item B.
