relief

re·lief [ ri lf ] (plural re·liefs)

Definition:
 
1. freeing of somebody from anxiety: a release from anxiety or tension, or the feeling of release, lightness, and cheerfulness that accompanies this

2. factor that ends anxiety: a factor that ends a painful or stressful experience such as pain, hunger, or boredom

3. stark contrast creating diversion: a factor forming a contrast to the general character of something else, especially something that breaks the monotony or tension of a longer experience

4. prominence caused by contrast: uniqueness or prominence caused by contrast
to bring out the differences in clear relief

5. social welfare aid to those in need: public help in the form of money, food, clothing, shelter, or medicine, provided to people who are temporarily unable to care for themselves

6. human resources replacement: somebody who assumes a task or duty when another completes his or her shift, or somebody who replaces another who is unable to work

7. graphic arts sculpture projection from surface: the elevation of figures or shapes from a flat surface, as seen in sculpture, or their apparent elevation, as seen in painting
