regulator gene

reg·u·la·tor gene (plural reg·u·la·tor genes) or reg·u·la·to·ry gene (plural reg·u·la·to·ry genes)

noun
Definition:

gene that controls another: a gene that regulates the expression of one or more structural genes, thereby controlling the synthesis of their corresponding proteins. In the simplest case, the regulator gene encodes a repressor molecule that binds to a site adjacent to the structural gene, so preventing transcription of the latter.
