[Mid-16th century. < Latin recuperat-, past participle of recuperare (see recover)]

re·cu·per·a·tion [ ri kpə ráysh'n ] noun
re·cu·per·a·tive [ ri kpə ràytiv, ri kpərətiv ] adjective
re·cu·per·a·to·ry [ ri kpərə tàwree ] adjective

Word Usage

Recuperate is normally used intransitively, that is, without an object, as in She needed several weeks to recuperate. When a noun such as health is the object, recover is a better choice: She needed several weeks to recover her health.
