Spelling Note

read or reed? Do not confuse the spelling of read and reed, which sound similar. Read is chiefly used as a verb, meaning "interpret written material": I never read the sports pages of the newspaper. It is occasionally used as a noun, meaning "something read" or "a session of reading": Her new novel is a good read.Reed is only used as a noun, denoting a tall plant that grows near water, or the vibrating part of musical instruments such as the clarinet or oboe.

Word Usage
read or red

? The verb read has two pronunciations. In the infinitive or present tense it rhymes with weed and as the past tense or past participle it rhymes with wed. The word red denotes the color of blood and is not a variant spelling of read as a past form, which sounds similar: I read [not red] the letter aloud. Have you read [not red] this book? Confusion may arise because the past tense and past participle of the verb lead is led.
