Long Is·land [ làwng lənd ] largest island in the continental United States, in southeastern New York. Queens and Brooklyn, two boroughs of New York City, are situated at the western end of the island. The Hamptons, a series of resort towns, are located on the island's eastern stretch. Population: 6,882,362 (2002 estimate).
