Cultural Note

The Rape of the Lock a poem (1712) by English poet Alexander Pope Written in mock-heroic style, it satirizes a major quarrel between families that arose when a young gentleman snipped off a lock of a young lady's hair. The poem's message is summarized in the opening lines: "What dire offence from am'rous causes springs/ What mighty contests rise from trivial things."
