Lib·y·a [ líbbee ə ] country in North Africa, south of the Mediterranean Sea. It was annexed by Italy in 1912, then became independent as a kingdom in 1951. In 1969 the monarchy was ousted in a coup led by Muammar al-Qaddafi. Languages: Arabic. Currency: Libyan dinar. Capital: Tripoli. Population: 6,173,579 (2008 estimate).
