former European empire: an empire in Germany and northern Italy from 800 to 1806, initially a revival of the Western Roman Empire. It became confined to Germany, and the emperor's authority was negligible after 1254. From 1438 the imperial crown was held almost continuously by the Hapsburg family. See also Roman Empire
