part of brain controlling voluntary muscles: the region of the outer surface of the brain cortex where nervous impulses controlling voluntary muscle activity are initiated. The motor cortex in the right hemisphere of the brain is responsible for controlling muscles in the left side of the body, and vice versa for the left hemisphere.
