large dark-colored whale: a large dark-gray or black whale, up to 15.2 m (50 ft) long, with a humped back and long white flippers, that feeds by sieving plankton and fish through baleen plates. Humpback whales communicate with each other using distinctive complex sounds that can travel over considerable distances. Latin name Megaptera novaengliae.
