| Definition: |
| |
crab that lives in empty shells: a soft-bodied crab that takes over an empty mollusk shell, usually a whelk shell, and carries it around on its back for protection and to hide in. It starts off with a small shell that, as it grows, is discarded for increasingly larger ones, so that it may change shells several times during its life span. Order Decapoda.
