1. prayer invoking Virgin Mary's intercession: a Roman Catholic prayer to the Virgin Mary based on Gabriel's and Elizabeth's greetings to her as recorded in the Gospel of Luke in the Bible. Churchgoers are often required to repeat the prayer as a penance, given in the sacrament of reconciliation.
