Cultural Note

The Gold Rush, a movie (1925) by director and actor Charles Chaplin. Set during the California gold rush of 1849, it places Chaplin's gentle and sensitive Tramp character in the materialistic, amoral environment of a mining town to great comic effect. In one famous scene, Chaplin is reduced to eating his shoes, but eventually he strikes it rich and returns home a wealthy man.
