foul line

foul line (plural foul lines)


noun 
Definition:
 
1. baseball line showing fair or foul ball: in baseball, either of the lines extending from home plate through first and third bases to the end of the playing field

2. basketball line for free throws: in basketball, either of two lines on a court from which players get unobstructed chances to make a basket after they have been fouled

3. designated limit of play: in some sports, a boundary beyond which a ball or player is not permitted, e.g. the line in bowling where the player must stop before releasing the ball
