fore-and-aft sail (plural fore-and-aft sails)

Definition:
 
four-sided sail: a quadrilateral sail that extends behind the mast rather than across the boat. The upper edge is supported by a pole gaff attached to the mast. Bermuda rigs are fore-and-aft sails.
