each other or one another?
The traditional rule is that each other refers to two items and one another refers to more than two: Joe and Lee respect each other deeply. All the people at the party knew one another already. This distinction is not supported by the weight of usage, however. It has been used in the writings of Noah Webster, Samuel Johnson, and G.K. Chesterton, among others. There is no good reason to reject the alternatives Joe and Lee respect one another deeply and All the people at the party already knew each other, although the last example sounds somewhat less natural.
