1. rotating shaft transmitting engine power: a rotating shaft that transmits the power from a motor or engine to another part of the machine, e.g. from the engine to the propeller of an aircraft

2. shaft transferring power to rear wheels: the shaft that transmits power from the transmission to the differential in a rear-wheel drive automobile or truck
